Team Wayfinder has spent this week getting ready for the Final Design Review. We’ve spent the week polishing up our poster, filming clips for our video, and finishing up the FDR report. We’re excited to present our work from the year and a little sad to finishing up and graduating. We managed to find a bit of time for one last team bonding to recharge before powering through the last few days!

Team Wayfinder Poster + Video

The team spent this week finalizing our final design report, filming our final video, and creating our team poster. Our presentation is less than two weeks away, and we are gearing up for the big day! We will continue to work on all of this in the coming week, getting ready to deliver an awesome presentation on April 25!

Beach Trip!

This week, the team made the journey down to Clearwater, FL to visit the Freedom Scientific offices. We headed out on Wednesday afternoon, checked into the hotel, and ate some delicious local Latin American food for dinner. The following day, the team completed some last-minute preparations and AV checks in advance of an upcoming presentation. When the time came, we had the opportunity to deliver a robust 45 minute pitch on our project to around 30 Freedom Scientific engineers and managers, which then evolved into a longer and more candid conversation about the inter-workings of our code and potential future developments. After saying goodbye and packing up the car, we headed to the beach for a quick dip in the ocean before heading home! Overall, it was a pleasure to meet the Clearwater team, and the trip served as excellent prep for our upcoming FDR presentation.

Prototype Inspection Day

This week we wrapped up our last event before the Final Design Review, Prototype Inspection Day. We showcased our prototype to several faculty judges. The judges even got a chance to try the demo application and give our navigation mechanics a try. The event went very well and we got some great feedback on our presentation that will come in handy heading into the FDR. We celebrated afterwards by going bowling as a team! (Sam won, but everyone improved from last time) Now we are just working on finishing up the last few features and polishing off the last few bugs in time for our sponsor visit next week.

Preparation for Prototype Inspection Day

The team is back to the grind after the break. This week, team Wayfinder has been working diligently to prepare for the prototype inspection day (March 28th). We are restructuring the code and UI organization for the demo application to make it more user-friendly. Additionally, we are preparing to showcase a second unity application that successfully uses our navigation mechanism package. Stay tuned for our interactive Prototype Inspection Day next week!

Spring Break with Team Wayfinder

Hello all!

As the team is currently having our spring break, there won’t be many updates for this week, but each of the members have continued to work on their own time in preparation for Prototype Inspection & Tests Evaluation Day on March 28th, as well as documents and reports for the Final Design Report (FDR).

Meanwhile, here are some pictures from each of the members’ travels 🙂 Hope everyone is staying safe and warm, and that you are getting lots of rest!

Preparations for Spring Break + More

Welcome back everyone!

This week’s updates include not only progress on our prototype and package, but also some sneak peeks into what’s been going on in IPPD class. On Tuesday, our IPPD class had the honor of attending a guest lecture on Storytelling by Dr. Elif Akçali. It was an extremely engaging and interesting presentation, and the team was able to learn and gather information that might be useful in creating our upcoming demo video. Here is a picture of some of the activities we did during the lecture:

A couple of the cartoons the team made by drawing one panel and then passing it on to someone else, repeating until the comic or story is completed.

Regarding project updates, the team was able to meet with Mohammed again, who is an engineer from Freedom Scientific and has been helping us out a lot throughout the course of this project. During the conversation, Mohammed provided a lot of insight and advice about controls relevant to JAWS key mappings versus those such as custom game controls; he also discussed how it is important to use controls that are simple and intuitive, irrespective of JAWS conventions. With these recommendations, the team plans to chisel down some of the controls we have for our application to try to make the controls as easy to learn and remember as possible.

QRB 2

Hello everyone!

We’ve got a lot of updates for you this week: along with a successful presentation for QRB 2, the team has also had a lot of user testing completed! During the QRB 2 event, the team updated the coaches our current status and progress with testing, as well as specifics regarding our test specifications and how we plan to move forward. We were able to receive a lot of useful and valuable feedback, as well as criticisms and questions that can help us to improve and tweak our current approaches.

Regarding our user testing with blind or visually impaired students at UF, the team was able to truly gain a lot of information and comments about our demo, such as any complaints about the controls, instructions, and even the immersiveness of the application. Many of the students provided very helpful insight in helping improve our project and as a result the team was able to learn a lot from them. We hope to continue to improve our demo application, and using all of the information we have gathered thus far, combine these mechanics and features into our package so that other developers will be able to create accessible applications as well.

Work Session with Our Sponsor

Our sponsor visited the team this Thursday and we had a work session together at Reed. During the work session, we showcased our main navigation mechanism and the corresponding developer package. Additionally, we interviewed a visually impaired user to gather more feedback for our demo. With valuable feedbacks from both our sponsor and our test users, we will be working towards refining and polishing our products in the next few weeks. We will update you with our new progress during QRB2 next week.

Team Work Session

Package Updates

Hello and welcome back!

This week, Team Wayfinder has some exciting, new updates to share. With a 3-hour work session in replacement of our normal class session on Tuesday, the team was very productive and was able to get a lot done. Splitting half of our team to work on package development and the other half on refining the demo application, we were able to accomplish many tasks. For the demo, the team worked mainly on testing, cleaning up some code and fixing bugs. The next steps that we want to focus on for the demo is reaching out to users for testing, so we are looking forward to that soon.

For the package, development is nearly complete – the team is now focusing on testing in a separate environment in Unity to ensure that it can be imported and integrated in other apps successfully. Additionally, a major update for the package is that with the use of UI Accessibility Plugin (UAP), we were able to replace our paid TTS system with an accessibility wrapper that could be added into our package and exported into another Unity application.
