That’s a Wrap

The Team Preparing for FDR

The IPPD program is coming to a wrap and we wanted to share everything we have done. A video pitching our project can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_2b2l6kGLkfD43U52I4rtRE0LXtKFJtb/view?usp=share_link.

The team would like to thank Dr. Catia Silva for all of her guidance and support throughout the semester, Dr. Adam November for his time and feedback in collaboration with Fanatics, and all of the IPPD course staff. Everyone on the team had a great experience and we learned a lot and hope Fanatics makes good use of our project!

The team is proud to present our poster for FDR. Additionally, our video pitch can be found here.

Testing in the Wild

The team at the orange and blue game

This week the team traveled to the Orange and Blue game! The team went to the game to test out our application in a real-world environment. We had a great experience!

We also got some footage for a video that will be posted to this blog in a few weeks, so look out for that! Overall, the team is very happy with where the project is right now and we look forward to the final weeks.

Extraordinary Engineers

Sarvenaz Myslicki, VP of Technology at AMEX

Last week was a very successful week after our presentation at prototype day. The team has be working this week to implement the changes from the feedback we got at prototype day.

At the same time, we had the opportunity this week to hear from Sarvenaz Myslicki, the Vice President of Technology at American Express. Sarvenaz gave a presentation on the daily life of an extraordinary engineer. She walked through an example day in the life of an engineer and detailed the many obstacles to productivity and success they face in the workplace. She then provided guidance on how to handle these challenges. By the end of the presentation we all gained insights that will be helpful as many of us enter industry in the next year.

Prototype Inspection Day

The team meeting right before the demo

This week we participated in Prototype Inspection Day (PID). This invent involves faculty judges approaching our display and being walked through our demonstration of our prototype. Overall, we got very positive feedback and the judges we very impressed with the product we have created. We also got very valuable feedback and will be working over the next couple of weeks to make the changes suggested. We are very happy with how the event went and will be working toward the final presentation coming up in a few weeks.

Preparing for the Prototype

Manuel testing out the prototype

This week the team has been busy finishing the prototype before Prototype Inspection Day (PID) next week. We have been meeting regularly to get each of our individual components integrated and are very excited to present our prototype to the judges! There have been some setbacks but everything is coming together and hope to get some valuable feedback so that we can make any necessary tweaks.

Spring Break

Spring Break Graphic

This week is Spring Break so there are no major updates from the team. We are all still hard at work on the prototype which we will present a couple of weeks from when we get back!

Telling Our Story

Dr. Elif Akçalı

In class this week we had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with Dr. Elif Akçalı who is a professor in Industrial Systems and Engineering at the University of Florida. Her workshop focused on storytelling and involved several engaging activities that emphasized creativity in the storytelling process. The highlight of the workshop was an activity in which each member of IPPD started a comic strip and then passed it along to a fellow classmate to add the next scene to the comic. The result was a bunch of very interesting and creative stories.

The workshop was tied to the upcoming tasks we have for our project. For the final presentation we will be putting together a poster and a video. It will be very important that we capture our entire year of IPPD in these small displays. Therefore, we must pay careful attention to the story that we choose to tell.

Navigating the Second Review Board

The first slide from our presentation

This week we successfully completed the second review board. The Qualification Review Board (QRB) is a series of two presentations followed by committee deliberation and evaluation. The committee consists of faculty coaches and IPPD staff. The purpose of these review boards is to ensure that the project is on track and that there are no holes in the plans presented by the team. The focus of the second QRB is on ensuring that appropriate testing plans and procedures are in place.

Overall, we had a successful presentation and were met with positive feedback from the judges. The committee identified one area we need to work on and the team has planned to focus all of our attention on this area. The team is working hard to implement our project and should have results soon!

Leadership In Engineering

Here are some of the highlights from the past week:

  • Guest speaker about implicit bias
  • Preparation for QRB 2

This week in class we had a presentation from Dr. Elliot Douglas who is a professor and undergraduate coordinator in environmental engineering sciences and engineering education. He presented on implicit bias and how it appears in the work place. He explained what implicit bias is and what to do to mitigate its effects. Overall, it was a beneficial experience for everyone on the team.

We are also working this week on preparing for QRB 2. The purpose of this QRB is to go over what our plans are for testing. We have some open questions as a team that we want to get feedback from the judges on. The team is still on track and we look forward to getting valuable feedback.
