Crunch Time

Thumbs up all around

This week has been very busy! We were given class time to work on our project and have been working hard to make as much progress as possible. The team met together and put our heads together to rework certain aspects of our project.

We have run into some issues with collecting data that is out of our control, but we have alternatives and backup plans that we are going to pursue if the bottleneck is not resolved. We have also discussed a really exciting aspect of our project, which is going to be developing a mobile application to demonstrate the usage of our work.

Looking to The Future

This week has been an exciting and busy week in the IPPD program. Here are some highlights:

  • Development in our prototype system design
  • Improvements in the performance of our models
  • IPPD alumni Guest Speaker

In class this week we got to hear from IPPD and UF alumni speaker William Johnson. He talked us through his professional experiences starting with IPPD, working in a professional role at Accenture, and now what he does at his own start up. This startup is known as Overhead intelligence and uses artificial intelligence and autonomous systems to create geographical mappings. He gave a lot of advice as to what we should expect as engineers in the work place and how his expectations did not match reality.

For everyone on the team this was a valuable experience and a chance to take a step back from the busy implementation of our project and examine the bigger picture of our time as IPPD students.

QRB 1 – Planning the Sprint

Now that the second semester has fully warmed up it is time to take all of the work from the past semester and create a fully functional prototype that solves our research problem. A preliminary step in this process is to work together as a team to create a plan for the implementation of our product in a process known as a QRB. This past week the team participated in the first of two QRBs. QRB stands for Qualification Review Board and involves creating a presentation discussing our plans for the implementation of our project and presenting this is a host of IPPD coaches and course staff.

Overall, we got very positive feedback and are ready to began the implementation process. The team is aware of what areas of the project need to be worked on and have already begun implementation steps. More to come soon!

Breakthroughs

This past week has been another busy week of IPPD!

The team has been working hard on project implementation. We have had some challenges but we also had a big breakthrough – the discovery of a data set has greatly improved the performance of one of our models. Other highlights include:

  • Preparing to use an external vendor for data labeling
  • Creation of new model
  • Model improvements

We have also been working on preparations for the QRB next week. This is an event where we will present our project plan to a panel of IPPD judges to solicit feedback about our timeline. We look forward to the event and discussing this with the coaches.

Planning Ahead

The semester is in full swing and we are working hard to ensure we have a successful semester. One of our biggest focuses right now is planning! We got together as a team to talk about what our short-term and long-term goals are in order to complete this project. We have also assigned dates we want specific tasks to be completed in order to achieve these goals. Beginning next week we will be working to implement this plan and the remainder of the project.

We also resumed Coach and Liaison meetings this week. Now that everybody is on the same page it is full steam ahead on our project implementation!

Back to Business

This week marks the start of the second semester of IPPD and the beginning of the second phase of our project!

Last semester our focus was on closely following the principles of engineering design in order to develop a solution for the problem Fanatics presented to us. This culminated in the creation of a prototype, that will serve as a baseline for our future work. This semester our focus will be on implementation — and we hope to present a working product for Fanatics in April!

This week we also had a presentation from Professor McElroy (pictured above) about professional credibility in an engineering work environment. We learned about the importance of maintaining credibility, as well as what to do if you lose it.

The Finish Line

We have made it to the end! This week we wrapped up the semester, but it was a very busy week! The IPPD program hosted the SLDR event. During this event we presented our project and progress thusfar to peers, coaches and industry sponsors. We received great feedback along with high praise from everybody in attendance.

As part of this event we also heard from a keynote speaker from the College of Business who talked about implementing your dreams. This was a valuable talk that we all will take with us into next semester and our lives after IPPD.

Overall, the team feels very happy with the results of the first semester. We are excited to get back to working on the project next semester and implement and finalize our project. We would like to thank our coach Dr. Catia Silva, our liaison Dr. Adam November, and IPPD course staff for all their contributions this semester. See you next year!

The Final Stretch

As the semester is approaching the end, we have been full speed ahead in developing the System Level Design Report (SLDR). The SLDR is the culminating event after one semester of participation in the IPPD program. All of the sponsors across all of the projects will convene in Gainesville to hear what each of the teams has been working on all semester. There will also be a networking session where teams will be able to speak with various industry sponsors and make connections. As for the content for the SLDR, here is all of our progress so far:

  • Produced draft of SLDR paper
  • Created presentation
  • Coordinated further development of specific aspects of the project

The team is very happy with the position we find ourselves in at the end of the first semester. Much of our project is complete and we are excited to show off all of our work this semester and look forward to continue developing the project next semester.

Pit Stop

The team is on break this week and is resting up for the Thanksgiving Holiday. When we return we will be full speed ahead on preparing for the SLDR presentation and applying the feedback from the PDR presentation.

The Big Day

Yesterday was prototype day — and everything went very successfully!

Here are some highlights:

  • Successfully demoed our pipeline on real world data
  • Received exceedingly positive feedback from judges
  • Gained a new sense of direction and interesting ideas

The whole team is very happy with the results that we were able to achieve. We have set ourselves up very well for next semester, as we already have a lot of functional code written. The focus of next semester will be to finalize each of these components and fully ensure that we are accounting for every possible edge case. For the rest of the semester we are going to be focusing on the System Level Design Review (SLDR) presentation. This presentation will have industry sponsors in attendance – so it will be a very valuable experience to showcase all of our work and get even more feedback.
