DOE Completion!

This week the CaffeGators successfully completed their Design of Experiment (DOE), which consisted of making (and tasting!) about 48 cups of espresso altering various variables and measuring the effects of each on the quality and taste of the espresso.

The variables we explored included tamping force, grain size, water quality, leveling the beans, and dose (amount of beans put into the espresso machine). The output variables we measured were extraction yield (concentration of solubles in the product), crema volume, beverage volume, brew time, and pH.

From these trials, we hope to be able to further understand the espresso making process by isolating the variables to determine which have the strongest effects and need to be controlled by our prototype. Our analysis will provide us insight and help us generate more concepts.

We are excited to share our experimental results and analysis, as well as a 3D printed concept at the Prototype Inspection Day in three weeks!

The one where we go to Boca – Newell Site Visit

This week, the team visited Newell Brands Boca office and lab to present our Preliminary Design Reports and project progression. We had the opportunity to meet our liaison in person and discuss our concepts. We attended a Mr. Coffee 50th year anniversary party and got to meet a variety of Newell engineers hearing about their various roles, projects, and products. We even got to take home an espresso machine to experiment with! We also visited the Boca Newell testing lab and saw testing on various products with many different processes and machines. We ended the night with a team dinner and some team bonding. The next steps for the Caffegators includes incorporating the feedback we received from the Newell team and completing our DOE trials to continue concept generation.

Testing and Presenting

This week we continued with our testing and presented a rough draft of our PDR presentation to the class.

With each new trial, we are getting closer and closer to becoming espresso experts. We received great feedback from our coach and fellow IPPD members on our presentation and immediately started making improvements.

We also coordinated with our liaison to visit their site in Boca Raton to present our finalized PDR and take a tour of their facilities. It will be great to finally meet our liaison in person and hopefully make some espresso with him as well.

We are excited to finish our testing and begin working on the functional prototype and mobile application and have plenty of coffee to help us through it!

Getting Hands on Experience

The espresso machine the team will be making most of the testing

After hurricane Ian, we finally had time to test our brand new espresso machine received from our sponsors! The team got together after class and started brewing our first cups of espresso, which didn’t really tasted good. Despite that, we’re all aiming to be experts in espresso making by the end of this project!

We started changing different input variables such as grain size, dose, and puck level, to test how they would influence on the espresso.

The team also made a tour around the laboratories within the Herbert Wertheim Laboratory, where a lot of testing and prototyping will be made.

Finally, in order to get more acquainted with the art of espresso making, the team visited a local coffee shop to watch and learn from their baristas.

Hurricane Ian wont stop us

Even with all of the commotion of the hurricane, we were still able to meet as a group and get a lot of meaningful work done. Before we had to hunker down, we attended the Six Sigma workshop, (see attached photo) and the next morning had a brainstorming session. We got some coffee, grinded out some work at marston, and have made a game plan for the semester. We are excited to hopefully soon have our first coffee party!

Starting Something New

We have some exciting new ideas and designs we are beginning to brainstorm and put to paper. We are getting ready to be drinking A LOT of espresso as we take the espresso making process apart piece by piece. Our sponsors are super excited to see what we can accomplish, and so are we!

Getting Caffeinated

Hello!

We are Team 12, and beyond excited to be working with Newell Brands this year! We are a diverse team of mechanical, chemical, and computer engineers ready to face the challenge ahead of us. This project will require us to work hard and collaborate with one another (with the help of many cups of espresso!) to accomplish our design goal. For this project, we will be guided to success by our coach, Philip Jackson. We can’t wait to share our journey and get caffeinated!
