Week 9 Blog Post

A weight has been lifted off of our shoulders as we just presented our PDR today. We had a successful presentation, and we were able to receive some great feedback from everyone who was able to attend!

This week, we have been making big progress with our prototype in both software and hardware aspects. The software team was able to log into the previous team’s website and view UI, available data views, and review the backend. Similarly, the hardware team toggled with the previous team’s gateway device and was able to observe sensor readings, achieve successful transmissions, and begin development of CAD modeling and analysis.

On Friday, October 23, Team 21 met with our Liaisons, Dr. Costin and Vikram Narre, and we reviewed and critiqued some of the methods or slides that were presented. Notes were taken to refine our presentation to become more reader friendly, and some additional notes were made to target our understanding of IoT, problem definition, and sensor selection. Overall, we learned that our presentations would be better suited in the format of a research method, and that we should look into engineering communication techniques.

Thank you to the SCI Lab for guiding us this week and giving us important feedback! As we move into the next week or two, we will be implementing all of the feedback to improve our prototype for inspection day on November 3. We are happy to report that the project is going well, and we are doing good with our schedule. Thank you for your support!

Week 8 Blog Post

Atlas IoT has been busy this week! This week we’ve begun work on our initial prototype, preparing for Prototype Inspection Day on November 3rd.

First, we established an internal schedule for developing our first prototype, with separate schedules for both our hardware and software teams. After setting our agenda, we then proceeded to develop a brand new CAD model for an enclosure of our edge nodes for our IoT system. We also were able to get last year’s cloud frontend up and running, with troubleshooting bugs soon to follow.

Looking ahead, we are currently in the process of piecing together our initial design, in preparation for Prototype Inspection Day. We are currently working on getting our sensor nodes up and running, along with our cloud’s backend. We are also still finalizing a date for our Preliminary Design Report Presentation, so stay tuned for updates!

Our team is hard at work in the SCI Lab!

Week 6 Blog Post

Happy Week 6!!!

The Atlas IoT Team 21 has had a successful week! This week we submitted our first draft of our Preliminary Design Review and presented to a handful of other IPPD groups. Our team was very excited to see the progress of other groups and get to hear some feedback.

The team was working on concept generation throughout the last few weeks and ranked their importance in comparison to feasibility, cost, convenience. As we worked, we developed a project schedule and we identified how we would be able to determine our future success. We presented to our peers and received constructive criticism on our presentation and our work, which has been great for our development. Our team watched and reviewed three additional student groups and learned more about what our peers are working on.

As our group continues, we anticipate finishing our Preliminary Design Review sometime in the next few weeks as we finalize a date for our Liaison presentation. Last week, we received access to the GitHub repository, which allowed us to start getting an idea of how to go about laying out the software. Once we are equipped with an official data for our Preliminary Design Review, we are officially ready to start working on a final concept, then on to prototyping!

Week 5 Blog Post

This week, Atlas IOT made significant progress in understanding the requirements of our project. We met multiple times to discuss and brainstorm ideas for our PDR and effectively distributed roles to complete about 85% of the report the weekend before it is due. We also began outlining our Preliminary Design Architecture, with ideas about our database architecture between sensor nodes and how our hardware will be constructed mostly finalized. We have also generated ideas for fallback strategies if a node fails and user role management in the building management system dashboard. We met with Vikram and gained further insights into the project requirements, as well as being added to the SCI Lab GitHub. Finally, we updated our team logo to include our team name:

We also attended a Six Sigma team-building workshop hosted by IPPD and FPL/NextEra where we collaborated with another IPPD group to manage a car dealership and maximize sales. Throughout an iterative process where we learned about efficiency optimization methods like how to use a fishbone diagram, we were able to bring up car sales from 1 car to 18 cars in the same time constraints. This workshop was very valuable to our group as it taught us a bunch of insightful methods to brainstorm and organize our thoughts, as well as identify bottlenecks in the production process. We feel that this will be very valuable for us in the future when we get deeper into brainstorming ideas for our project and setting them into motion.

Looking ahead to next week, we plan on finishing our PDR draft and presenting our work to our peers. Upon receiving feedback, we will integrate it with further insights from exploring the SCI Lab GitHub to further optimize and plan out our PDR and Prototype ideas. We also will complete the Preliminary Design Architecture, and meet with Vikram to further discuss the feasibility of our ideas.

Week 4 Blog Post

This week has been all about building a strong foundation but before we could do that we first chose to embrace a new identity.  “Ohm Sweet Ohm” officially changed our name to the more apt “Atlas IoT” to match our team logo. Once the new identity was settled we dove straight into establishing a foundation for expectations for the project by drafting of our Product Design Requirements (PDR).

The team mapped out eleven project requirements, ranked their importance and defined clear success measures of what successful implementations of these requirements would look like. We also reached out to our Lab Director and established a preferred line of communication and gained access to the project’s companion repository.

Looking ahead, we are also looking to get our hands on the lab materials and documentation from last year’s IPPD project. These resources will enable us to further review our PDR draft and see where and how we can improve it. We are actively seeking feedback from our Liaison on the requirements, as well as input from our Coach on the PDR report rough draft by Thursday, September 24th. Once we are equipped with their professional opinion, we will swiftly revise our design specifications to ensure Atlas IoT is in its best shape for the next phase of development.

Week 3 Blog Post

This week, our team, Ohm Sweet Ohm, created a team name and logo, attended lab safety training, established a team charter, and established team roles. Our team agreed to rotate roles once every few weeks.

We also met with our coach, where were given many helpful tips that helped the previous year’s team.

In addition, we met with our project liaison, where we discussed project details, specifics about the SCI Lab, as well as clarifying the overarching goal of the project.

Next week, we plan on getting access to SCI Lab’s code repository and documentation of prior work, reviewing the work completed by last year’s team to build upon their progress, and establishing proper communication channels with the SCI Lab.

This is only just the beginning of an exciting project! Stay tuned for next week’s post!
