Systems Administration & Relevant Updates

Anti-spam countermeasures have been enabled and are now fully employed on IPPD's GroupWise system in an effort to thwart unsolicited spam and bulk email into our system. It has been a problem for us, and it is now time to stop it in it's tracks!

This includes:

      • OPEN RELAYS:
        www.ordb.org
        *Email server hosts that are open to use to send email, regardless of membership, etc. - where huge amounts of spam and bulk mail are known to originate from;
      • REALTIME BLACKLISTS (RBL's):
        www.spamcop.net

        *Who specialize in building lists of known spammers - period;
      • MAIL ABUSE PREVENTION SYSTEM (MAPS):
        www.mail-abuse.org
        *Specializes in educating and encouraging Internet Service Providers to enforce strong terms and conditions prohibiting their customers from engaging in abusive email practices (i.e.: spamming);

If you feel that OFFICIAL IPPD or UF BUSINESS EMAIL (only!) has been blocked (i.e. - someone has repeatedly attempted to send an email to your IPPD email account and yet it never gets through) - it is probably being blocked by one of the above services.

To request that an exception be made, please send an email to:

    Room 175 down in NEB is almost pretty much ready for team use. It is usable now while there is still a little more organizing and such needing to be completed.
  • Nov 26th, 2003

    I have added Pro/Mechanica Structure and Pro/Intralink 3.3 for both 2001 and Wildfire versions of Coach. Please choose your version accordingly.

    Also - Pro/E web-based Coach (CADtrain) product and IPPD's training page have both been updated. Please check it for pertinance to your project (if any).

  • Nov 24th, 2003

    A New version of Pro/E 2001 is now available for you to download for the purpose of installing on YOUR personal computer(s).

    This dowload link is direct from IPPD's servers (requires IPPD logon credentials). No longer will you need to go through Mechanical Engineering to get this media for IPPD projects.

    Please contact Norm Miller if you require Pro/E Wildfire instead of Pro/E 2001.

    Ansys Engineering Simulation software is now available up in Weil Hall on both Design Stations.

    We are beginning to utilize the GroupWise Document Management System/Library to post official IPPD documentation, policies, training materials, as well items such as team "Final Design Review" and "System Level Design Review" instructions, direct from Dr. Stanfill - amongst many, many other items -- as they become available.

    This library of documents is under a constant state of change and flux. Things will be added and removed constantly. Items that are put into this library are also PERFECT for you to use for your TEAM BASED projects - or just as a secure collaboration platform.

    Everyone on an IPPD team can participate in a single document - like final presentations, deliverables, etc.

    Being a Document Management System, GroupWise allow users to "check out" documents from the library, make edits, and then they simply "check-in" and put them back when done. GroupWise will keep track of each user's changes, allowing the coach and/or team captains to "accept or decline" the changes of the document revisions.

A collaboration environment is defined as an integrated set of applications that enable team/group-based:

      • Document Management providing "revision controls"
      • Calendaring
      • Task Management/Assigning
      • Email
      • Newsgroups
      • Discussion board
      • Sharing folders / proxying accounts

We also solicit your input for things you think we should also include in this wonderful resource, or changes you think might be worthy. Usage of GroupWise will most defintely be a mandatory thing next year......so why not take advantage of it now so that we can all healp make next years IPPD more productive from the first day?

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

When you open the GroupWise client, you will have some "Shared Folder Notification" messages in your Mailbox. Simply double-click each one (one at a time), and a "wizard-like" window will open (Next button and all), and in that window it will basically be asking you what you want to name the folder to, where you want it to be created, etc.

NOTE:
I strongly recommend leaving the options, name, choices on their defaults (exept for the "Description" field) - which are determined by the sender of the Notification - so that if we refer you to it verbally or in writing at a later time, we will inform you correctly and thus, will be less confusing.

    ANSYS (engineering simulation software) is available on our "WALK-UP 1" and "WALK-UP 2" Design Stations located here in NEB 154 -- by the copier.

    Eventually I will get Ansys installed onto all of our Design Stations.

    Please contact Norm Miller if you require access to this software for your notebook/laptop.

    Weil Hall wireless IS NOW READY FOR IPPD USE for all students who have already sent me their MAC addresses and received the obligatory reply-email with the WEP Encryption keys (or click here to get the remaining instructions ) necessary to utilize IPPD's wireless access points located in NEB and Weil Hall.

  • Nov 13th, 2003

    Weil Hall Design Stations 7 (by the window) and 8 (in the cubicle) are now both deployed and operational for IPPD use.

  • Oct 30th, 2003

    Walk-up Design Station #2 (located on the tables to your left-hand side after entering 154NEB that you can just walk up to and use without reserving) is now up and ready for your use.

    Please note that I will get ProTel DXP loaded and functional on Friday, or Monday at the latest;

    I will also make BOTH of the WALK-UPS support our USB scanner (located between these two systems), with the proper driver and Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.0 already installed - all you have to do is unplug the USB cable from one machine and plug it into the other.

    NOTE: The scanner will function ONLY on these two "Walk-Up #" machines, none of the "Design Station #" machines.
  • Oct 29th, 2003

    Weil Hall (room 501) has one of the two Design Stations ready for team use. The second machine SHOULD BE operational by 10/30/2003 @ 5pm.
  • Oct 20th, 2003

    New Pro/E links added

    New IPPD Pro/E site to launch soon (http://proe.ippd.ufl.edu) - will contain everything at the above link, as well as all online Pro/E help files, training info, ProE career info, user groups, etc.

  • Oct. 17th, 2003

    GroupWise WebAccess (email, calendaring, etc.) has been switched over to SECURE SOCKETS LAYER (a.k.a. "SSL") so that passwords and login names are not sent as clear text over HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) that all standard web browsers (Mozilla, Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.) use.

    Please update your bookmarks/Favorites.

  • Oct. 15th, 2003

    IPPD Wireless Access has been REACTIVATED and is ready for your use!

    If you have not already done so
    , you will need to send me your MAC Address before you will be able to connect to it.

      • ENCRYPTION HAS BEEN ENABLED, SO EVEN USERS WHO HAVE ALREADY SENT ME THEIR MAC ADDRESSES WILL NEED TO CLICK HERE FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS (opens in a new window, & requires IPPD logon)

  • For remote access to your HOME and COMMON drives, a product called Novell NetStorage should be available within a few weeks. I am testing it out at present, and have discovered some small issues that I need to get resolved before I make it live.

  • IPPD Design Stations in 154 NEB are ready for team use! There are some very important steps that all students and coaches need to perform, and those can be found here (requires IPPD authentication).
    • You will also need to install IPPD's printer under your local user profiles on login as well, and those instructions are here .

      (These also apply to those of you who are on IPPD's wireless and wish to install and use IPPD's HP LaserJet 8000 printer from your personal laptop).

  • IPPD Teams - Note the location of your first team meeting, scheduled for 9th & 10th period on Wednesday, 25 August, highlighted in yellow
