Projects 2004-2005

ASRC/NASA (USTDC)
Advanced Water Flow Loop Control
Description: Design a human-machine interface for the control system of a water flow loop used to support the space shuttle launch program. The interface should include valve position indicators and should feature safety-interlock logic to protect all personnel and equipment.
Class 1
Embedded Wireless Modem for Heavy Duty Vehicle Network
Description: Develop an embedded wireless modem module to interface with ES-Key enabled devices on heavy duty vehicle controller area networks. The module will allow remote system monitoring, diagnostics, and configuration for fleet vehicles.
CSX Transportation
Track Testing Vehicle Scheduling System Phase II
Description: Develop a software system that will schedule the track testing automatically. The system will have a friendly user interface, a database, an optimization module and a GIS subsystem. The software will generate test schedules in near real time.
Dell Computer Co.
Generic WMI Simulator
Description: Create a set of software tools for simulating generic Windows Management Instrumentations (WMI) providers to assist Dell in technical support, product testing, and in streamlining hardware and software development.
The Dow Chemical Company
Ethocel Reactor Sample Purification
Description: Ethocel is a commercial ethylcellulose polymer used in pharmaceuticals and other industries. In order to ensure quality control of the final product, a method is being developed to enable the quick preparation of subsamples for QC prior to final batch processing.
The Dow Chemical Company
Novel In-line Monomer Removal Process
Description: Design, test and validate an appropriate processing strategy for reducing residual monomer in polyethylene oxide powders. The process should be easily retrofitted into the current plant, and it must avoid undesirable gel-effects, promote coalescence of small polymer particles, and reduce total production time.
Firehouse Restaurant Group
Thermal Sandwich Wrap and Work Flow
Description: Design an optimum work flow pattern to maximize use of a new continuous automated sandwich steamer, and design a new packaging system that will keep carry-out sandwiches warmer and crispier for a longer time period than current packaging.
Gainesville Regional Utilities
Package Plant Biosolids and Septage Management System
Description: Design of a septage and biosolids receiving and management system to reduce potential adverse effects on wastewater reclamation facilities, allow for appropriate billing of users, and ensure safety of personnel.
General Dynamics
Anti-tampering for Sensitive Technologies
Description: Commercial and military devices often contain sensitive information stored in the device itself. This project investigates methods for protecting the device's intellectual property from unauthorized examination both before and after the device is used.
General Dynamics
Passive RF Tags for Military Packaging
Description: Provide an assessment of the risks in storage and handling that may result in the use of RF ID systems for General Dynamics products. Provide a recommendation of whether or not to delay implementation of passive RF ID until the emerging generation 2 standard is formalized.
General Dynamics
American Growler Manufacturing Facility Layout
Description: Design a 25,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility for American Growler to optimally manufacture 3 to 5 military all terrain vehicles per day.
Harris Corporation
Positioning Device
Description: Design, analyze, and fabricate a 3-axis positioning device capable of locating a 3-lb payload to within 0.001-inch accuracy. When stowed, the device must fit within a 6"x6"x6" cube. The device is also required to provide over 2.5 inches of travel.
Harris Corporation
Software Defined Radio Transceiver Technology Investigation
Description: Investigate architectures to accomplish software defined radio designs. Demonstrate operational capability of RF undersampling and Polar Modulation techniques in support of SDRs.
Honeywell Space Systems
Error Injection for Reconfigurable Computing Systems
Description: This system will inject single-bit errors into the configuration bit stream of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The induced errors will simulate events caused by radiation in a space environment and allow testing of mitigation techniques.
Integrated Technology Ventures
Autonomous Highway Traffic Beacon System
Description: Design and develop a highway beacon system that can provide drivers with advance warning of driving conditions. The solar-powered beacons will be able to sense their immediate surroundings, and relay this information wirelessly to other beacons down the road.
Integrated Technology Ventures
Ventricular Assist Device
Description: Develop a prototype of a miniaturized prototype of a novel Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). The prototype shall be able to be implanted into a pig for an initial five pig clinical feasibility study.
Jabil Circuit
Surplus Assets Management System
Description: Design and develop a WEB based Surplus Asset Management tool which will be accessible by any Jabil site globally over the Internet. With this system each site will be able to list its surplus assets and request acquisition of other sites surplus assets over the Internet in real time.
Lockheed Martin
MEMS-based Corrosion Health Monitoring
Description: Selection and testing of a MEMS technology sensor system for allowing a determination of whether conditions were present for corrosion of materials and whether those conditions were such to cause an unacceptable degree of attack. Sensor performance will be based on results from environmental chamber corrosion testing.
Medtronic Xomed, Inc.
Medical Sponge Automatic Packaging System
Description: Develop an automation system to compress and package medical nasal sponges into blister packs for commercial use. The equipment will increase the production of sponge packs by five fold.
MRI Devices
Magnetic Field Safety Detector for MRI Facilities
Description: Design of a system to detect and warn users of the presence of a high magnetic field.
Pizza Heat Corporation
Pizza Heat System
Description: Increase customer satisfaction in pizza restaurants by providing a table-top unit which will keep a pizza warm during the duration of a meal. In addition, the unit will have the flexibility that the user can select his/her preferred optimal pizza temperature for enhanced eating pleasure.
Raytheon Systems
Wireless Honeypots
Description: Design, build, and test a wireless honeypot, a simulated environment for a wireless networked system. Track suspicious nodes and traffic, and log their activity.
Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation
Process Plans from Solid and Assembly Models
Description: Design a more efficient methodology for generating process plans for large assemblies using Pro/Engineer that provides step-by-step instructions. The main objectives are to develop process plans directly from solid and assembly models created in Pro/Engineer and study the cost, time, and quality benefits relative to current practices.
Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation
Generator Data Acquisition System
Description: Collect the data inside a large, pressurized generator and pass the information out with few or no frame penetrations. The data acquisition system must interface with the utility's plant control system.
