Projects 2001-2002

ABB Water Meters
Reclaimed Material Effects of Virgin Polymer Properties
Description: Develop a way to recycle some or all of the wasted sprue and runner pieces that result from the injection molding of polyacetal gears for water meters. Recommend a polymeric material that can be molded in a hot-runner injection molding system to replace the polyacetal copolymer that is currently used in a cold-runner system.
Boeing
Quick Disconnect Autonomous Docking for 2nd Generation RLV
Description: Develop a mobile service unit which semi-autonomously mates ground support equipment to a launch vehicle.
CAE USA
Instructor Operator Station Controls
Description: Develop a database and set of related tools to support the construction of Instructor Operator Station user interfaces for Aircraft Simulators. The database will support the development of multiplatform controls so that both desktop workstation and handheld control station software can be generated from specifications for control screens.
Class 1
Gauge Case Internal Moisture Control
Description: Design a new dry pressure gauge at a lower cost than liquid filled gauges with the added features including backlighting and minimal pointer needle vibration.
Cordis
Mechanical Clot Retrieval Device
Description: Development of a micro-endovacular device for the treatment of ischemic stroke that involves disruption, collection and retrieval of these blockages.
Dell Computer
Platform Software Automated Error Detection
Description: Design and implement a system for regression testing of Embedded Server Management (ESM) firmware that resides on board Dell servers. Software will communicate with the ESM through an attached micro-controller board, and simulate/test various sensors such as fan speed, processor temperature, and intruder detection.
The Dow Chemical Co.
Slurry Vessel Process
Description: Design, build and test a system with electrical control of mass flows in a distribution system for suspension slurry of polymers that are useful in paint formulations.
Dynacs
LETF Lift-off Simulator Upgrade
Description: Design a digital control system to monitor and control a lift-off simulator used for testing umbilicals designed by NASA for use in the space shuttle and in future-generation space vehicles. Replace the original relay-logic instrumentation, and introduce new capabilities to improve the performance of the equipment, to increase its level of safety, and to serve as a platform for training new operators.
Gainesville Regional Utilities
Disinfection Optimization at the Kanapaha Water Reclamation Facility
Description: Design a system to minimize the destruction of chlorine by sunlight in a chlorine contact basin and explore alternate methods of chlorination so that disinfection is assured, disinfection by-products are adequately controlled and chlorine use is minimized.
Harris
Carrier Latch Assembly Redesign
Description: Redesign a film tray carrier latch assembly for digital mamography laser imaging system. Improve latch reliability and retraction force while reducing cost.
Harris
PCI Test Adapter Card
Description: Develop a PC-based interface card to test the latest generation aircraft multifunction display devices--implementing both IEEE RS-422 and a proprietary fibre channel interface on a single short PCI card.
Honeywell
Reconfigurable PMC Card
Description: Develop a PC card for reconfigurable computing applications utilizing a field-programmable gate array that is radiation-hardened for space use.
IBM
Mobile Service Tool
Description: Modification of software interface so that IBM servers can be accessed with a hand held wireless device for server maintenance using a Handspring Visor and the Bluetooth protocol.
Kimberly Clark Corp.
Separation of Multicomponent Product Using Grinding
Description: Design of a process for the comminution and separation of polymer materials for recycling purposes.
Kimberly Clark Corp.
Nonwoven Surface Treatment Applicator Design Improvement
Description: Nonwoven fabrics are used in the production of diapers. The objective of the project is to design and optimize an applicator fortreating nonwoven material with surfactants.
Lockheed Martion
Modeling Behavior of Artificial Eyelid MEMS Devices
Description: Develop a non-linear finite-element analysis FEA procedure to analyze the behavior of artificial eyelid MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) device. Use the nonlinear FEA procedure developed to search for an "optimal" design of these devices.
Mark IV Automotive
Dodge Viper Coolant Hose, Molded End, No Lubricant Process
Description: Develop process and tooling to produce dimensionally correct formed end coolant hose with out use of lubricants and post-cure trimming.
Maxwell House
Design of Production Scheduling and Control Decision Support System
Description: Study the current coffee making process and develop the architecture of a production scheduling decision support system at Maxwell House Jacksonville plant in order to improve the asset utilization and productivity.
Raytheon
Multilevel Security Web-based Database-Access Control
Description: Design and implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype for multilevel-security database access via the world wide web.
Regeneration Technologies, Inc.
Allograft Transplantation Instruments
Description: Develop and prototype a device which will enable precise removal of defective tissue from the femoral condyle (knee) and allow accurate geometric duplication of excised tissue from a donor allograft.
Siemens
Multi-line Digital Telephony Over DSL
Description: Prototype an Integrated Access Device product for homes and small offices, which would provide multiple simultaneous high-quality voice & data connections using Channelized Voice over Digital Subscriber Line (CVoDSL) technology.
Solutia
Staple Tow Bonding Problem
Description: Solutia is a major producer of nylon-66 tow used in carpets and other textiles. The objective of the project is to design and build a device that bonds two staple tows. The bonding must be strong enough to withstand the force required to stretch the tow.
Texas Instruments
High Speed Serial to Parallel and Parallel to Serial Data Conversion Interface
Description: Development of a card which will be reprogrammable through a serial port which will allow data format modification at a high speed. The device is bi-directional and has serial and parallel data in and out with programmable voltage levels.
Texas Instruments
Low Power, Multi Port, Variable Load for Wireless Applications
Description: A programmable multi-input current load with precision Kelvin current measurement and voltage measurement is being developed to test Texas Instrument multi-output voltage regulator ICs. The load instrument will be GPIB networked to a PC computer and controlled by a Labview program.
USAF
Rocket Deployable Tactical GPS Dropsonde
Description: Repackaging of hurricane hunter dropsonde for launch by a 2.75" rocket to gather wind speed data over a battlefield.
USSOCOM
Remote Camera Control and Display System
Description: Develop a wireless and mobile system that will enable control of a remote camera from virtually anywhere in the world via a cell phone. The operator will also have the ability to download a picture taken by the camera to a cell phone.
